The New England Patriots signed rookie defensive tackle Chris Jones off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and to make room on the active roster for the 6' 2", 310 pounder the team released offensive tackle Josh Kline.
The Patriots defensive line was thin at the tackle positions. Starters Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly are solid, but their only back up is Joe Vellano, an undrafted rookie from Maryland that is similar in size to Jones.
Jones is a brawler that used a combination of deceptive quickness, low center of gravity and a violent initial punch that helps him win the gap more often than not and possesses a spin move that helped him earn double-digit sacks as a senior. His most notable attribute, however, is his conditioning and non-stop motor.
The Bowling Green product, who was selected by the Houston Texans in the sixth round of this year's NFL draft, will probably be a healthy scratch for Thursday night's matchup with the New York Jets.
