The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' running back was escorted from the field by team trainers just four plays into Friday night's exhibition game against the New England Patriots, reportedly asking the medical staff if they happened to get the number to the trucks that ran him over.
Chandler Jones' knocks Tampa's Martin (22) from the game |
That's trucks. Plural.
The Buccaneers were missing their two starting offensive guards, and so on the first play from scrimmage for Tampa Bay's offense Martin stayed in the backfield to pass protect for quarterback Josh Freeman, colliding with his quarterback on the play fake and unable to anchor himself to pick up a blitzing linebacker, who happened to be Brandon Spikes...
...imagine the horror. The Patriots' front seven consists of very large individuals, any of which could break loose from their blocks and have a straight line to the quarterback, but when Martin staggered up into the hole, he saw double 5's, a menacing looking facemask - and then stars.
The second year back out of Boise State had no chance. At 5' 9" and 220 pounds, He bravely stepped in front of the hard-charging Spikes - who has 30 pounds and half a foot in height on the diminutive and speedy back - then got absolutely trampled...
...as did Freeman a split second later, but that was hardly the end of the abuse Martin and Freeman would absorb.
The Buccaneers' initial series would result in a three and out, wasting excellent field position after a 63 yard kickoff return by Michael Smith put the ball on the Patriots' 42 yard line, but after a defensive stop on the ensuing Patriots' possession, Tampa Bay got the ball back on their own 24 - Freeman dropping back to pass, Martin stepping up to the left to pick up Chandler Jones...
...his thinking clearly influenced after getting steamrolled by Spikes the previous series, Martin ducked under Jones' patented "Mr. Rivera" rush, thinking that cutting him at the legs would be better than getting stomped by the 6' 5", 270 pound defensive end - but got Jones' knee to his helmet for his troubles.
Mr. Rivera |
Apparently it works on small running backs as well.
Martin arose within seconds, but was clearly in an alternate reality and was escorted to the sidelines where he was being "evaluated" - which is exactly what Buccaneers' coach Greg Schiano needs to do to himself the next time he feels like putting his featured back in harm's way to pick up the blitz on passing plays.
Especially when facing the monsters in the New England Patriots' front seven...
