The New England Patriots have been busy filling holes in their depth chart this off season, and today filled a 6' 6", 325 pound hole on their defensive line.
Former Oakland Raiders' defensive tackle Tommy Kelly and the Patriots agreed to terms on a two year deal that brings the 32 year old Mississippi State product into the rotation in New England's ever-evolving hybrid line.
Details of the contract were not made public immediately, but it is believed to be incentive laden with little or no guaranteed money - a far cry from 2008 when Kelly signed a five year deal worth $50.5 million, making him the highest paid defensive tackle in the game.
He earned the label of underachiever since, playing well from the tackle spot next to Richard Seymour but never realizing the potential that caused Warren Sapp to mentor him as a young player, though he did make the 2010 Pro Bowl as an alternate.
Kelly's combination of bulk and speed make him a versatile weapon in Bill Belichick's defensive line rotation.
More on the signing as information becomes available.
